The Secret *"I have a secret I've kept from everyone in my life for more than 10 years. Should some secrets just stay secrets?"* Ten years. That's a long time to carry something completely by yourself. My first thought isn't that you need to tell someone. And it isn't that you should keep it hidden. My first question would be: **What has keeping this secret cost you?** We all have things we don't share with everyone. Privacy isn't necessarily dishonesty, and I don't believe we're obligated to reveal every chapter of our lives to other people. But there's a difference between something being private and something becoming a burden. Maybe you've kept this secret because you're embarrassed. Maybe you're afraid someone you love would see you differently. Maybe revealing it could hurt another person. Or maybe you've lived with it for so long that you don't even know how you would begin telling someone. I'd ask you something else, too: **If you knew with absolute certainty that the person listening wouldn't judge you, would you want to tell them?** If your immediate answer is *yes*, perhaps part of you doesn't really want to keep the secret anymore. Maybe you don't need advice. Maybe you don't need someone to tell you whether what happened was right or wrong. Maybe you just need to say the words to another human being and finally have someone else know. And if you're not ready to do that, that's okay too. Sometimes before deciding whether a secret should be shared, it helps simply to understand **why you've been protecting it for so long.** So I wouldn't begin by asking: *"Should I tell?"* I'd begin with: **"What am I afraid will happen if I do?"** The answer to that question might tell you far more than I ever could. And if there's something you've been carrying that you've never felt comfortable talking about, you can talk to me. You don't have to start with the whole story. You can simply start with... **"Elizabeth, there's something I've never told anyone."** I'll listen. **I'm not a therapist. I'm simply someone who listens without judgment.**
